Call for Submissions

Through a series of large-scale artworks, PHANTOM WING explores the soon to be demolished 1960s wing of the historic King Edward School prior to redevelopment as a multidisciplinary arts hub. A community of 15 artists / collectives are invited to create large-scale installations within the abandoned wing. Artists are encouraged to fully utilize the space and re-appropriate discarded materials when possible. The resulting exhibition will be both an echo and a bang: a reflection and a mirage. In essence, PHANTOM WING proposes the creation of a phantom limb – an event designed to resonate long after the building is severed from its adjoining sandstone counterpart.

PHANTOM WING is independently organized by Artist-Curators: Matthew Mark Bourree, Caitlind r.c. Brown, Jennifer Crighton, Shawn Mankowske & Natalie MacLean, with special thanks to Brandon Dalmer, Andrew Frosst, and John Frosst.

  • ARTISTS INSTALLATION DATES: September 2 – 23, 2013
  • PUBLIC EXHIBITION DATES:  September 24 – 29, 2013 (coinciding with cSPACE’s 3-day showcase event also featuring YYC Fashion Week, Pecha Kucha #17, and Terry Rock’s Going Away Party)

The Curators wish to thank cSPACE for their support and enthusiasm.

PHANTOM WING seeks submissions from Artists, Collaborative teams, and Collectives interested in creating large-scale installations onsite at King Edward School. We are looking for artists interested in engaging the space, with a special emphasis on interactive, kinetic, new-media, and/or time-based installations. Artists are encouraged to approach the project with a general spirit of collaboration and site-specificity. Although not required, artists are asked to work with recycled materials whenever possible.

Please note: The floors and plaster walls cannot be cut into in any way as they contain asbestos. However, there are many available structural hang-points within the building, and screws/anchors can be carefully used on walls and floors. Details are available upon request.

Each selected Artist, Collaborative team, or Collective will receive an Artist Fee of $300, and an additional $200 for materials.

Digital submission should be sent to by August 26, 2013. Submissions should include:

  • A brief Statement of Intent outlining your interest in the Project and your general intentions.
  • A short CV or Bio. We want to learn about the notable things you’ve done in the past or are working on right now.
  • Support Material including images, video, written materials, and/or recordings of your previous work. Digital links will be accepted.

Submissions from all genres of art-making are encouraged. New or existing works will be considered. Some safety limitations apply due to hazardous materials (again, we won’t be able to cut holes into walls or flooring, unfortunately).

E-mail applications to by August 26, 2013.
